I snapped a few pictures this morning of the new greenery in our SFG.
We have green things
Pictured below are Red and Green onions, started from bulbs. Garlic which was store bought California White (I believe), some direct sown carrots, and a surprise group of cucumbers which hadn’t sprouted inside, so I’d dumped the starting cups out into the garden. Apparently they like this place better, so they’ve decided to grow
Also pictured are some of the Broccoli transplants.
The tomatoes and peppers will have to wait a couple more weeks before they are transplanted. I’m still worried about the weather staying warm, and I’d hate to have them killed off after watching them grow for so long. We also got a pretty late start on all of our indoor seeds, so I guess it won’t hurt to let them go a bit longer. They do make it outside daily for at least a few hours. I’m new to all of this so I hope I am handling the ‘hardening off’ period correctly.
We purchased some plastic fencing to keep the critters out, and put up some 2×2″ posts to hang trellis netting from. We’ve not yet found the netting that we are looking for so we need to do some hunting or look for it online. I’ve seen some nylon netting that has about 6 inch squares that look large enough to reach in and pull a tomato through. We also put down more weed cloth between the raised beds and laid down mulch. I think this is a great look for the garden and will be easier than trying to re-seed the grass in the area. Though the SFG is supposed to be much less work, I can imagine that we’ll be spending a bit of time out around the garden and it’ll be difficult to get the grass to grow this year.
We’ve also moved our compost pile around and added another bin. Now we’ll have a place to store the finished compost which should make it a little easier to deal with. The compost in the far bin is what we started last fall, and the closer is what we’ve built up over the winter months. You can also see the leftovers from what I purchased to fill the beds with. laying on the tarp beside the second bin. I used a bit of what we’d started last fall, and purchased a mixture of three types from Price Farms Organics in Delaware, Ohio. I’ve also go a bit of mulched up leaves for browns to use when adding stuff to the new pile.
