We are getting close to planting time here in Ohio. Hopefully we are having our last cold spell this weekend with the forecast calling for 50s during the day and mid-to-high 30s as our lows for Saturday and Sunday. Mother’s day is usually our unofficial planting date for most crops and we are hitting it pretty close this year.
Our cold weather crops are coming along just fine. Pictured here are our side beds as of today. From left to right in the closest bed is Cabbage (4), Brussel’s Sprouts (8), and Broccoli (8). There are also a few Nasturtiums that I transplanted a few days ago, as well as 4 squares of Green Onions that have just sprouted this last week.
In the middle bed we have Romaine Lettuce and Peas that are both doing great. There are also five squares of Carrots and one square of Romaine Lettuce that were sown a couple of weeks ago and are sprouting this week. We continue to have poor germination with the Spinach. Though I did harvest some leaves off of the two plants that initially sprouted, the rest of the spinach is slow going.
In the furthest bed we transplanted some Marjoram and Parsley last weekend. They are both fairly small yet, but they seem to have taken to their new home.
Over the next couple of weeks we will be transplanting Basil, Tomatoes, various Peppers, and a few different herbs – including Anise and Sage which are still under the grow lights.
Our tomato seedlings are doing remarkably better than they did last year. They’ve received much less water this year, and I also transplanted them deeply when they were potted-up to cups.
