Accessibility Tripwire – Beware Defaults

June 10th, 2006

One of the most common accessibility barriers I come across in my daily browsing is that of colors being only partially specified.

The W3C is doing a good job of spreading the word by including warnings in the CSS validator, and Tips of the Day in the HTML validator, but they seem to be ignored in many cases.

These warnings should be heeded, not necessarily to adjust your code so there are no warnings, but to realize there is a potential for conflict.

If you use the default color schemes for your operating system and browser, conflicts may not be apparent in a visual check.

Movable Type as an Accessible CMS

May 25th, 2006

I’m installing MovableType on this server to see how well it performs as an accessible Content Management System (CMS).

Several Web Standards and Accessibility advocates use MovableType on their sites, so I believe that if it doesn’t do well out of the box, that it can be beaten into shape without too much trouble.

I think it’s time to spend a little more time on writing and not just on putting sites together.

New pit in the works

May 26th, 2005

A couple weeks back I spent quite a few hours in my pit playing Pacifc Fighters, the latest addition to Oleg Madox’ IL2 Sturmovic series and, to put it bluntly, my ass was sore from sitting in my pit all day. My Akers-Barnes pit has served me well for quite some time, but it’s time to do an upgrade on my seating.

My buddy J got a new APC Sport Seat from Jeggs this past X-mas and reworked the Akers-Barnes design to incorporate it.

I decided to pick up the same seat, but have been tossing around ideas on what to build around it. I think I’ve settled on using PVC pipe instead of plywood as it will be lighter overall, and won’t require as many tools, or time, to construct.

Last week I picked up a couple 10′ sections of 2″ PVC and an assortment of fittings to play with. I’ve played around with several different ways of constructing the pit, and have a general idea where I’m going, but I’m not quite done yet and will probably tweak the setup for a couple of weeks.

I’ll write more on my experience on working with the PVC once the pit is done.

New website Launched

February 15th, 2005

I’ve been working on a budget website for a friend of a friend. I was hesitant to post an announcement, as I am really not happy with the way the client wanted to do her logo. In the end it is my work and reflects my inability to convince the client in some aspect, so my failures, as well as successes, should be shared. I was given free reign on most of the layout and did try some new things.

The website is at http://www.fareat.com – Find a Real Estate Agent Today.

Layout Change

January 10th, 2005

Changing some things around a little. I’ve been working on designing with web standards for a few months, and I thought it might be fun to re-do my home page.

I’ve changed the structure of the site around a bit as well, I’m getting rid of a couple old pages and catagorizing a little. You can do some amazing things with XHTML and CSS. I’m just playing now, deciding on what tricks I like.

I have a couple of web projects in the works for other people, so I don’t know how much time I’ll spend on this site. Seems like I only update when I want to play around with design. I’m not much of a writer ;)

Not much time

January 10th, 2005

I haven’t really spent much time in the cockpit recently. I get a chance to do some flying a few times a month, and spend most of the time in IL2:FB. It’s been close to a year since I’ve spent any significant time in LockOn.

It looks like Lock On: Flaming Cliffs should be released soon, hopefully they’ve spent some time working on the “game” and made it more than the tech demo that the original seems to be. Although it is beautiful, and the flying feels nice, it just doesn’t seem to have the soul of the old Jane’s titles.

A-10 CCIP Bombing In LOMAC

January 13th, 2004

Andy Bush has written another great article on SimHQ entitled A-10 CCIP Bombing In LOMAC.

I’ve been working on re-doing the “Combat Weapons Parameters” chart in the article as it is pretty difficult to read as it is.
